“Privatize profits and socialize costs”
Is a common strategy of some businesses (& grift-oriented gov’ts). Science tends to expose the costs, so such companies dislike it and lobby/donate against it.

Certainly some businesses are opposed to science that gets in the way of them making money. The most obvious examples are science around the health effects of smoking or the climate change effects of burning fossil fuels.

None of that explains the desire to cut cancer research.

Honestly, I think the simplest explanation is that the scientific establishment by and large opposes Trump and so this is his retribution.

Maybe, but really there is long history, well before Trump, of companies & think tanks (anything Koch-related, including Heritage, Heartland, CEI, etc) attacking science that impeded profits or power.
