We have been lucky enough to see it a few times over many years, including with Joan Sutherland in 1980. When we saw it in San Francisco in 2011, we overheard another opera goer saying that he had never seen this opera, to which his companion assured him that ‘ nobody has seen this opera’!

And I’d say that’s only a slight exaggeration and I wonder why. I think it’s a great piece, full of all the things I want from a Donizetti opera, above all glorious ensembles. A quick glance at the archives says the Met has done it exactly once, in 1904!

I never attended a live performance of it. La June (Anderson) debuted later in her career in this role but I missed her performance (she never did it in Paris).
