Under the impression that cold stratification took 4-12 weeks in the fridge. Think I'd rather just sow some seeds outside in the fall and let them overwinter. Like Eremurus seeds I just got. On the other hand, NZ hybrid delphinium seeds recommended stratification. They germinated just fine without.

Yep - I kept the seeds in the freezer all winter. I usually direct sow in the fall but we re-did our gardens last year and we didn't have the opportunity to plant anything.

You'd think you'd be able to buy pre-stratified seeds ready to go. Instead of finding out when you get the seed packets that you've got a long wait.

I know, right? When I order from Prairie Moon their seed packets come with stratification instructions, so that's nice. I've never seen any other company include that info on their packets.

I didn't know poppies needed cold stratification. Seeds packs and most German sources don't even mention it. That probably explains why the self-seeded plants work better for me than the ones I tried to sow directly in spring. 🤦‍♀️

What WHAT? Does that work for trees or shrubs? I have been unsuccessful getting blackthorn to propagate. I've tried the refrigeration and moist sand for a year etc. Just can't get the hang of cold stratification

Possibly! I use this method for plants that don’t like to be transplanted and prefer direct sowing. Otherwise, I use the milk jug method.
