Having to take my care to go anywhere is what makes me not want to go to a store.
Lots of people, mostly clothes shops. A lot of other pedestrian streets around that one are nicer.
More cafes, theaters, bookshops.
And still no cars, they're not designed for that, they were drawn centuries ago.
But yes, cities are more alive like this! And businesses thrive so much in main streets that small shop have to move to smaller street due to rent pressure/competitiveness.
Banning cars is to ban people who would otherwise participate in the culture and the commerce of a place. The price for clean, car-free streets is too high unless subsidized by government.
I'm always trying to figure out where I can get something in person, but at best Target is selling the exact same Chinesium at double price and it's locked up and there's no one at checkout.
