People hurrying in under awnings, chatting; rain washing the streets clean again after markets; waiting for taxis after clubbing in the rain; kids jumping in puddles…
Years ago, when we were all coming up w projects for the city of culture, I dreamed up this series of events called ‘did you hear the rain last night?’ All about embracing the (famous) Limerick rain! There is also a cool playground that comes alive with the rain, let me find it…
This should definitely have happened. I’m obviously obsessed by limerick, I had a look at the City Surveyors archive last time I was there and there’s great material. Can I buy you a coffee when I’m next in Dublin? I think we need to talk about rain
It strikes me that in Limerick city in particular, there must be something in the confluence of absurdly long school skirts and absurdly damp footpaths that creates a very specific… aesthetic? Affect? Not sure how to label it!
Such a wonderful idea! Made me think of #UnaWatters and 'Girl Going by Trinity in the Rain' (1959). Mary Morrissy has a lovely piece here about Colbert donating it to the National Gallery, and she specifically mentions the architectural depiction of the rain. https://unawattersartist.com/2023/03/20/its-raining-at-the-national-gallery/
Having just cycled to work through Copenhagen's built in environment in torrential, near freezing rain I feel very seen by this fantastic project. Will be following with interest.
I've just remembered this fab painting, "Street Scene in Windy and Rainy Weather," by C.W. Eckersberg (SMK, Copenhagen). Apologies for intruding, but I love the topic.
