De Gaulle was an anti-federalist who helped torpedo the European Defence Community (which would have created a European Army) and browbeat the other EEC members into the Luxembourg Compromise that created the veto system. Anti-American he was, but a eurofederalist he was not.

Actually to expand on that. On a surface level eurofederalism and gaullism seem in tension, but they are not. Gaullism is the dead-eyed pursuit of the (French) national interest with the intent to make sure the state is able to choose its partners, not to be subordinated to them.

Yes that state is France in the case of de Gaulle's action which is why you see him act in an anti-federalism manner. He was however in favor of confederalist European integration.

So when I say "eurofederalist gaullism", I'm calling for a federalized EU state that is dead eyed in its pursuit of interests.
And does so to maintain strategic autonomy and the ability to be able pick it partners, not be subordinated to them.
