It wasn’t a single drummer. It was two drummers behind one band.
On March 3, 1968 I saw the Grateful Dead playing for free on Haight Street in San Francisco. I knew them from their first album, with Bill Kreutzman on drums.
Now, they had added Mickey Hart. The result was mind-blowing to me.
I was probably about 5 or 6, and I remember seeing a live polka band and being absolutely captivated by the drummer. I stood at the front of the stage and airdrummed the whole time.

I had never imagined someone could play polyrhythms.
What?!
But my dad is a jazzhead, so also Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.
Honorary mention for Peter York (another Krupa fan) and Rob Hirst, who'll still hit anything if it makes a noise.
He taught me how to drum in the 70’s - guy was insanely gifted!
and a few days later, I heard Bill Bruford for the first time
