Why are we equating Dems crossing over to pass anti-immigrant legislation with Dems extending an olive branch to do objectively good things like capping interest rates on credit cards? The latter likely won’t happen - but they have a duty to try!
I don’t think they have to give Trump credit and legitimacy while doing the latter. If a GOP member wanted and got something decent done across the aisle, they’d never openly credit working with Biden or another Dem on it. But they know Dems will give them credit/praise for it.
But there’s also an element of calling his bluff - the guy who stocked his cabinet with billionaires is never, ever going to follow through on that. Make the effort, make him break his promise, and show people he’s a fraud.
Break bread with them, but don’t give up what matters in service to them… the problem with politics is that we cannot speak and listen to one another to come up with mutual solutions.
I agree. Eating from the same table as cannibals is how you get cannibal cults. Republicans have known since before 2016 what Trump is. They are eating from that table.
can you blame them?
I mean Democrats have supported immigration, rights for women, protect Obamacare, social security, democracy and yet, Hispanics, blacks, women and elders voted for the orange clown. So, yes, that's what the country want, the Republicans way, so don't cry later & blame Democrats.
Not very far off. We are skewed heavily to the right politically. We are dealing with binary minded people. It's either on or off. It's either everyone is a flaming homosexual or a handmaiden's tail.
All of these traitors are dead to me. I will not vote for a single incumbent in the elections. It's time for representatives who work for the people, not the oligarchs, not the MAGA fascists, and not the military industrial complex.
They still think they can negotiate with a Nazi. We fought a World War with a man just like him, he will start another one just because he can and we as a nation will do nothing to stop him because we're so stupid that we think this is normal.
Agree - capitulation only serves trump. First, Dems have to a stake in the current economy - jobs, GDP, wages, inflation. Otherwise trump will take credit. Second, dems have to make it hard for trump to take a piss. Be loud about the bad in any bill, exec action, anything - demagoguery works -use it
The Republicans were hijacked. The Protestants were hijacked. The new group is called Maga and they're fascists. Not Republicans, not democrats. Fascists. It's a whole new government now. Any pretense up until the 20th is just that. The govt shifted the moment not one Democrat opposed certification.
I know in conflict you work for common ground, but in this case, when the stakes are so high and you are dealing with a liar it may not be a good idea. We need a charismatic leader who can lead people away from disinformation and outright lies.
Not only will their voters not reward them, neither will the Trump administration. They are prostrating themselves for nothing. Laws will be broken & reasonable discourse will not be tolerated. There will be no negotiations. Trump & Project 2025 promised that. @aoc.bsky.social @sanders.senate.gov
I seriously cannot believe we are under a fascist state where we listen to lies and attack groups of people who have done nothing but help our economy.
Public agreement to play politics is the only way to throw off the game plan to force Dems to "create chaos" by resisting and playing right into their hand by stooping to magat level. Zoom out. This is an incoming cabinet of pillagers & pirates, not politicians.
Who are they going to upset? The 90 million people who didn’t vote in the last election? The 70 plus million who voted for Trump? It seems to me that the Republicans have a winning message here. It a shitty one but the uneducated voter loves it. You have to play the card you are dealt.
Seriously? Look, if we expected GOP support for our own reasonable bipartisan efforts, it would the height of hypocrisy to engage in complete stonewalling of everything the GOP puts forward that actually HELPS our country and its people.
Of course we oppose the nuttery, but not reasonable governing.
You don't resist by collaborating with the enemy to enable harming Americans...which they have just done twice and are signaling intent to continue with (hello HB 28). You resist by ensuring their government fails in every way it can.
The GOP knows this, it's a major factor in their long-term wins.
Yes, but... Here's the deal - we know that 99% of their expected fuckery we resist/oppose, but if we oppose even the ONE thing they propose that's good, that will be the ONE thing they hammer on over and over again.
We can't give them ONE thing to hang their anti-Dem hats on.
They will and do drag Democrats already, you're not selling a strategy that works.
And if they have a good idea, they tie it to a poison pill to force Democrats to either kill it for them or accept passing a harmful GOP priority. Either way, they get dragged and people get hurt.
In the past 16 years, when has the GOP ever improved its behavior because Democrats modeled civil bipartisanship? The GOP sabotages efforts to improve things and is rewarded for it over and over again. Democrats get zero credit for taking the high road.
I don’t think bipartisanship or compromise is inherently bad, but this article highlights how much the Dems have given the narrative over to the GOP and ceded ground. You should fight bad things! You should undermine GOP efforts because most of their goals are bad!
We're in violent agreement. What I'm trying to say is that we will LOSE support by opposition for opposition's sake.
I don't expect very much good governance from the GOP, but we must always be VERY clear what we stand for, and that's good governance for ALL Americans. And message, message, message!
so it's not progressive to identify that the working class is largely republican and try to work with that? you're really just pushing democrat good republican bad
Horrible take. If the GOP agrees to raise minimum wage and lower credit card interest rates, it would be idiotic to not support this and other legislation that helps wokers.
Respectfully, I think you're missing the point of the article. You can't compromise with a bully; they'll just laugh at you for being a pussy and continue to bully you.
"Okay, I'll give you my lunch money today, but I'm sure tomorrow you'll be nicer to me, right?"
AOC has sponsored a bill to ban stock trading by members of Congress. It has some Republican support which is needed to pass. I don't think she is compromising or selling out.
Both great ideas, I think we agree, but i don't see it "working with Trump" or "compromising with the GOP."
Let's hope both bills move forward. Sadly, I wouldn't bet on it.
B.S. headline.
Bernie will find common ground with 10% cap on credit card, like Trump promised.
AOC will find common ground with cutting fraud if it is aimed at Pentagon.

Democrats are Republicans trying to convince you they're socialists, while Republicans are Nazis trying to convince you they're Republicans.
What matters are actions. This article is moot by confusing actual policy surrenders with comments that are merely taking Trumpism seriously.
It's not a matter of being subservient, it's a matter of picking your battles where you can have the biggest impact.
Start by picking fights over everything, and no one will care about anything.
I don’t blame them for being tired of “resisting”.
No one is to be blamed except for the 7 million Democrat voters that voted for Biden but sat home for Kamala
Would you rather see obtuse MAGAT like CONTRARIANISM?
A road to nothing?
And we all know what happened to HIM in 1984
The goal is to get benefits to working people. If that means working with Republicans then you work with Republicans.
