never thought i would see the day when i have to start recommending my friends setup their hosting on EU servers because data on US servers will not be safe under the next administration.

Honestly data wasn't really safe under THIS administration because our government (except California) has done absolutely nothing to regulate how companies use/ protect your data. Whereas the EU has a decent framework governing the protection of consumer data
West Coast ones should be fine. Newsom has already been putting in a lot of work & the WA SOS is a cybersecurity expert. Apple is based in OR & won an invasive lawsuit against Trump. Still, back up your docs, iBooks, & buy hard copies of treasured Kindle editions.
You can start by using a provider like Hetzner and using EU Region servers, specifically those in Germany, who has among the best privacy laws in the EU
Old heads like Me scrambling around looking for digital copies of Jolly Roger and Phreak manuals so we can still go low tech if this gets worse than it already looks.
Bad news from Europe 4 u: you data won't be safe on European servers either.
The EU is planning to implement TOTAL surveillance of all its citizens.
Which means banning all forms of encryption and installing surveillance software on your computer.>> https://edri.org/our-work/dutch-decision-puts-brakes-on-chat-control/
>> ... that will report anything you type, view of do on your compuiter/phone/tablet to the authorities.
It's a surveillance scheme that makes the chinese look pale in comparison.
It's utter madness of course, and likely not even possible to implement, but if it happens....>>
People also don’t seem to understand how dangerous it is to let a man like Musk, who controls the Starlink satellites and is one of the richest man on Earth, control the American government from the inside. You think shit is bad now? Wait until they get EVEN RICHER while in charge…
eh, I think this is quite the hot take. Encryption is still well protected by US laws and courts. EU is actively trying to dismantle end-user encryption.
Following!!! Of all the shit I've had to consider in the last week, and the plans I've had to make, this didn't make the list. But now it's on my list & I'll be awaiting guidance.
I've started using the new administration as a Disaster Recovery scenario for our cloud infrastructure. Just a week ago it used to be a backhoe cutting through a cable in North Virginia
well i don't think it's ever been safe. Not with how we move through communication. i still think yall are ai lol.
but yeah it's a good idea to be cautious
OVHCloud has very affordable bare metal server hosting in Ontario. I use them since I live in a border state. EU would be best though if you go with a big name provider with decent latency.
I always use EU servers for hosting websites I manage. I need to follow GDPR, and that is easier to do if the servers are EU based. Data in the US are already not safe. That has been the case for years. You might want to read Permanent Record by Edward Snowden.
Their security is only as good as the provider and the corruptibility of the provider’s jurisdiction. Mullvad is your best bet, but steer clear of its owned or leased hubs in corruptible locations.
Mullvad is cheaper than Express, and even allows anonymous payment. I have also found performance to be at least as fast and reliable as both Nord and Express.
Naomi Brockwell is good on security, etc. Here's a short. For more detail search YouTube for NBTV vpn: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HF-GukClrRI
Omg, good point. And one I was pondering as to what do we do with our entire systems unguarded and unsafe under this current admin & what we’re sure they’ll plan/do
Yes, Musks quote, "Anything can be hacked." Is true for voting systems, cell phones, computer systems, satellites, & more. Coders have known this for decades. It's the educated public that is finally realizing this. Musk was/is only trying to stay out of prison.
As far as I can tell that won't fix anything, NSA tracks anything going in or out of the country too, so all the traffic between them and their safe server in the EU would be tracked unless covered by e2e.
Price, the ability to manage what code was placed on the site, and a good reputation. I specifically wanted a company of Danish origin as well, since our family intends to eventually live there and start a business.
I wouldn't say it's more secure, but the EU data privacy rules are attractive, and my content will not be under US jurisdiction. The latter is a real concern for me given the nature of the incoming administration.
That's exactly why I asked.
Is the fact that your content will not be under US jurisdiction due to ONLY using the https://one.com OR is it in some way related to the fact that you'll be moving to Denmark? After I read your post, I looked into it thinking it might be a way I could protect my data. Thanks!!
Saddly, even a lot of those places are also getting less safe. The collapse of the German government and far right leaders taking over most places points to that. We have to push for a better tomorrow, and be ready for anything.
Yeah, owning guns is a must now... Get them now, BEFORE the problems start. Shits going to get bad if trump really takes office. Civil war is very possible if Trump takes office... Almost 95% of a chance. Women will be fucking respected, the people won't just roll over. LFG
Most EU countries have a multi party system. Almost nowhere does 1 party have an absolute majority. It requires partnering parties. It is clear though that the economic neoliberals in EU saw the US election as opportunity to provoke an election (Germany) or sabotage coalition talks (Belgium).
For example in Belgium the Walloon neoliberals won by a lot with their populist George Louis Bouchez in the south, but the Flemish neoliberals got clobbered brutally in June (and in local municipal elections last month). Bouchez was untrustworthy partner to Flemish liberals in prior government.
Anyway, these are very complicated coalitions and agreements with backstories and histories that may not be pretty, but makes a dictatorship difficult. Also the social democrats and further left are on the rise too here. We’ll be ok for next 4-5 years still.
I'm not a bot. Do not mute me. Do not try and avoid engaging with me. It serves no one any good. It only furthers division. I am perfectly capable of having civil conversation and it seems like you know what you are talking about. I ask why you think our servers will be unsafe?
You seem civil, let me explain it to you why, first lets set aside the policies, the problem is more about that he is voluntary or not helping extremist, im not even from USA, and yet here are groups that love trump and are bashing LGBT, that are racist, etc.
Heck even talking about him (im avoiding naming him because of that) can even let you be harassed in your dm's and even at the worst cases it can lead to people sending you death threats and shit like gore
There are plenty of ppl on the other side of the issues that hate me for me. I see extremists everywhere. I get your point. In conservative circles I see them and they are rarely called out. However, I am a conservative and that’s not going to change.
Im not gonna change you, im just explaining why people just decide to not interact, mostly because those extremists hate our guts, it makes us feel unsafe when we get hate just by existing.
At this point it is better to ignore just to not deal with them because it is tiring
canadian here, not into US politics, do you mind expanding on this? i will do my own independent research but im very interested on your exact perspective here, what exactly is making data on US servers unsafe?
When shit goes down, they will be using these surveillance systems to track people and witch hunt. "Woke virus- LGBTQ+ etc, and keep track of pregnancies and miscarriages and abortions..." Shits about to go down hill quick. Prayers in school, demolition of education system, cut government...
And Elon will be cutting "inefficient" system in the government making way for a revolt and uprising, and at the peak of this... Putin will come in and put a vice grip on the american government that is in shambles from all the cuts and emergencies. Marshall law might go into effect... Shits bad bro
Time will tell. It's my prediction if he even takes office. 🤷 And I'm not afraid. I'm just talking about it, because I'm the only one who thinks it, so talking about it helps.
yep, for a very few buck one can make their own cloud storage.... even if they aren't really versed in setting it up... and people should get a VPN set up.
It wasn't the most safe to begin with but at least we knew there were regulations and that there were stopgaps of people to protect data privacy & rights. Now.. I don't even know anymore man..
Switzerland's also not a member of NATO, never mind "five eyes". They're also an extremely rich country with a global outward economy...they're pretty much unvulnerable to US pressure
As a Swiss, I unfortunately have to say that we're also big into surveillance and our security services are gathering and saving online data even without concrete suspicions
got rid of my hosted domains, and am going to let my domain names lapse too. the Internet will soon be dead, as it is the source for information used to harm those of us who care about free speech and knowledge ~
I first tried NixOS - it was way too complicated and time consuming to get anything installed. So I installed Debian, but it's using Plasma 5 and I wanted Plasma 6 for HDR support. So I then re-installed a third time and went with Kubuntu. Things are working good so far!
Why do you say that? Do you think it is safe in our current administration? I think data safety is an issue and will remain so until most of congress dies of old age or grows a conscience, depending.

Until this proposal is dead and buried, I wouldn't recommend anyone to move their data to servers in the EU.
i'm gonna look into other alternatives that are safe to recommendand try to make a brief video with information for less tech-savy US users
All I know is that privacy is no longer a word, seemingly, in Webster's dictionaries.

2. Trump was banned from YouTube for two years.
3. Trump was banned from Instagram and Facebook for two years.
4. The government pressured Facebook to censor dissenting voices as “misinformation”.
And OP saying that the US data is not safe NOW?
The government didn’t pressure them the info is public. The government notifies them of potential misinfo then meta decides if they ban it or not

thanks so much for all your direction here 🙏
I set up a parked blogging site at an EU-based hosting company (https://one.com) last year for this very reason.
Is the fact that your content will not be under US jurisdiction due to ONLY using the https://one.com OR is it in some way related to the fact that you'll be moving to Denmark? After I read your post, I looked into it thinking it might be a way I could protect my data. Thanks!!
they're muted for everyone and their posts should be hidden at the bottom of the thread, but pls do not engage with them.
i'm in the process of reporting them to labelers
bsky server outages today have interrupted my posting schedule and i had to push the video for release tomorrow.
i'll be on my profile page under the hashtag #SharpieVLOG
At this point it is better to ignore just to not deal with them because it is tiring
Time to go look up web hosts again, I suppose
when you logging in to PSO2 to run your dailies? 😈
Now. Isn't that ironic.
None of that is safe.
which flavor are you on? i have a media server running ubuntu rn
