They often claim the supports are sufficient - yet Lorenzo was 60 when he became disabled and couldn’t avoid homelessness. What hope do the rest of us have?
I agree they wanted to save him … but it feels cruel that they do this while voting against any policy changes that could save ALL of us.
Because they KNOW disabled people in Canada are kept below the poverty line. They know it’s impossible for us to survive without help.
So when one of their own became disabled - they ponied up /2
We’re left to beg for scraps. To spend our days suffering, stressing and defending our existence to friends and family /3
Or relying on abusive family/partners who treat us badly in exchange for “helping” /4
They could remove barriers to support and strike down punitive rules that keep us from getting ahead /6
There was nothing unique about their colleague. Disability and homelessness can happen to anyone. /7
But man, does this leave a bitter taste in my mouth
It can happen to all of us even if we were succesful before
And if you don't already have a strong and resourceful social network before you are fucked for life
But none of these people is gonna apply these facts to policy
