U.S. Border Patrol detained a U.S. citizen with learning disabilities in New Mexico for 10 days after he approached an immigration officer asking for help after a medical episode. Border agents forced the 19-year-old, who cannot read, to sign a transcript of his arrest he says was false.

It will happen to anyone who is even temporarily disoriented by disease or dehydration. It’s like trying to communicate with someone at the ER when you have a 104 fever. We will all need dog tags and emergency alert buttons that don’t call 911.

As a person who works with, knows, loves, and cares for people with disabilities and has for over 20 years, this story broke me. I'm struggling so much with all of this. Watching the country I'm stuck in as it falls and descends deeper into fascism is a horrifying reality. 1/1

1/2 My daughter is Autistic and has another duality in her identity that puts her at a huge risk for being targeted quickly. We live in fear every day for the safety of our communities, neighbors, and ourselves. I want to believe that most of us didn't want this. The reality is that I don't know.

1/3 I have no idea who would be trustworthy or who would think the rhetoric was true. My job will be on the line, eventually, and I can't imagine it. It's like a terrible nightmare. My daughters whole future is uncertain, and her options have narrowed so much.

Thank you. 💛 I attended a 'Know Your Rights' training tonight, hosted by an immigration lawyer and a state organization leader. I plan to do what I can to fight back in whatever ways I can, too. They come for one, they come for us all. United, we stand.
