To be fair, I realize as a society we have been through some shit since then. I wonder if that is also a factor. When I read it the first time I hadn’t spent over a year as basically a shut in.

Very true, it doesn’t feel so far away anymore :/. Shift is also hitting differently for similar reasons (but I’m only 40% in so far)

I think the show runners of the TV series did a fantastic job at bringing many of these characters to life... Knox, Holston, Billings, Jules, Shirly were so much more fun to read about after having seen them on the show. Also I think the show made some VERY good changes to the plot.

Thinking about it some more, I think you hit the nail on the head… in the book the world building is great but the characters are weak, and it doesn’t quite hang together all the way. The show filled in all the gaps on the characters (and then some), so rereading the book after watching was fun.
