Something has changed deep inside me because here I am, not bummed out but excited about having to read the manual and consult some guides to understand the battle system of Vagrant Story.

GameFAQs is definitely the place for Vagrant Storry guides. Beamup's Mechanics guide is a fantastic resource, JTilton has a few very helpful guides on there as well (he was pretty much the GOD of VS guides), and for a general walkthrough guide, well, I'll toot my own horn - mine's the way to go!
Wizardry was a similar experience, having to learn the manual before playing the game, and recently reading through DnD's Player's Handbook was a blast too so I'll have to accept this is who I am now.
