If they're not battling their stakeholders, bosses and publishers they're battling online twats who are never happy with what they make for them. It's sad.
Too many enter this industry at a young age under the deluded that they can "do what they love" & play games all day, not realizing a bazillion others had the same idea at 18, so it is flooded. Add to it the artist mindset which usually mean a wishy-washy person w/ 0 business sense or self-worth.
Then mix in the opposite. The business types who see a massive market that pulls in more than the movie industry. They see the ability to exploit these young, naive idealistic individuals & know they can push them because of the flood of candidates sooo willing to put in hrs to get their "big break".
Yeah, Japan's labor laws are far more strict than most countries and generally only risk of insolvency is grounds for layoffs there, so job security is much better. But yeah, as someone who worked in games in Japan for the first half decade of my career, pay is low and conditions can be rough.
Watched/read a thing saying that part of that is the Japanese tech industry believing that software is a comparatively unimportant part of the process, and that the real talent does hardware.
That's why coders have it so rough compared to the West.
ditto for pretty much *any* industry that isn't weapons, fossil fuels, tech-bro bollocks, whatever the fuck it is that KPMG do, or advertising
everything is about exploiting human creativity and burning up people who care, while the planet collapses and five billionaire dickwipes get even richer
Like, if you told someone that didn't know anything about games what the state of the industry was, they'd probably assume this was a dying artform. But no, it brings in more money than all other mediums *combined* by a considerable margin. This shit is so stupid, man
As someone that gamed when I was younger and started back during the pandemic, the industry is killing itself. The resources it takes to make the 90 plus bangers is insane, razor thin margins. Also, a real artform needs a real award show to celebrate the industry, like the DICE awards not the TGA
The vast majority of that profit comes from two brands that get relatively minor tweaks every year but have essentially been the same game since 2005: Madden and FIFA. They dwarf every other game sales figures and have little production costs.
WB employee here! Got told today I won't have a job come April.
And I'm a dialysis patient. Makes it even more harrowing. Not having a job for me is literally life and death 🫠
I tend to believe that demand for really nice graphics on games that don't need it is killing the industry by driving budgets up on big-budget games, but I've also seen convincing arguments that less mismanagement would make a bigger difference than cutting even all the graphics work.
I just wish I could get hired, I spent 8 years in college to work in the industry, im actually *good* at a lot of this stuff but nope, no game releases, no AAA credits, no job.

Every game is almost rewritten from scratch other than tooling.
It's pretty exhausting for the devs and expensive for the company.
It's also risky.
Like its as fucked as the many Western AAA studios that we often hear fucking up

Not sure if true, but it scans.
