It definitely works on iOS: searching in the system-wide spotlight search finds OCR’d text in screenshots. I rely on that regularly and just verified it still works. I’ll check on my Mac for you when I can (though I’m on the latest MacOS and don’t know if it worked in old versions) - ThreadSky

yes that’s exactly it, it always worked on ios and i was so excited when it began working on mac as well, but now it’s stopped!!!!!

So I just tried it on my Mac running MacOS 15.3.1, and it worked! This was a screenshot from iOS (don’t know if that matters) that is not otherwise tagged “chili crisp” except that it appears in text in the screenshot.

I was gonna say, did it stop completely or just for new images? If it’s the latter it might be that, but if it stopped completely then it might be something else. Did you turn off Apple Intelligence? It might be tied to that.

My photos app sometimes says “indexing paused” for long stretches of time. No idea why. It did not appear when I was doing this testing, so your suspicion that it’s indexing related sounds right to me.

It also works for me on Mac screenshots imported into the photos app… but not on screenshots on my desktop. It looks like the regular Finder search doesn’t even attempt to read OCR data. So this feature does exist, and you’re being gaslit. Small comfort, but I hope this helps.

right, my issue is that screenshots on my desktop USED to be read straight out of the folder… i suppose i would need to import them into the photos app to get read now? i can always give that a shot but it’s annoying!!!!!
