🚨Hugely valuable new research determines that misinformation is delivered and driven almost exclusively by radical right-wing actors for political ends.

Misinformation isn't random - it's strategic. 🧵

In the first cross-national comparative study, we examine 32M tweets from politicians.

We find that misinformation is not a general condition: it is driven by populist radical right parties.

Our moral framework is based on fairness/harm reduction. Conservatives’ is authority/rigid social hierarchy/piety/loyalty. They are innately undemocratic; control & imposing their beliefs is of utmost importance so they lie/cheat/steal for power. Fairness & harm are inconsequential, control is all.

Fantastic study! I think we need to be careful with our terminology though. Disinformation means spreading false information intentionally. This research describes the deliberate and strategic spreading of false information and therefore the correct term is disinformation, not misinformation.

It's hard to exaggerate the importance of these findings. This is empirical evidence that, far from being an organically occurring phenomenon, misinformation is a very specifically political tool used to achieve specific goals.
