1. You can take sick days, and even burnout leave. This is no shock to Europeans, but it sure was for me as an American. Depending on your contract, you will need a sick note on day 1-3 from your Hausarzt (family doctor).

For comparison, in the US, sick leave is not a requirement by law, and many people have 0 or a very small amount (5 days is common). 2/2
Example:
10 weeks AU for difficult pneumonia means 6 weeks “Lohnfortzahlung” (full continued payment of wages by employer) + 4 weeks “Krankengeld” (60%? paid by insurance)
However, if you then have a relapse of pneumonia within a year, your “Krankengeld” will start on the first day of your sick leave.
What do they do with PKV employees? There the insurance usually doesn’t know anything until the end of the year.
