whoa. What is still amazing to me is how they actually hit so hard the prey is evidently dead right away. Seen it so many times on videos, around the world. Eagles in Mongolia trained to hunt wolves! One hit. Just mind boggling.
yup those scarry looking claws are known to have carried away many many neighbors cats, who shreiked away to their death in the night from Thousand Oaks, California! Myself and neighbors have seen the heads of dead cats under big trees. Those claws hook into the loose cat flesh from above.
Do you have any advice on finding owls to photograph? I’ve seen a few locally while mountain biking but when I go back on foot with my camera, I can’t ever find any.

I was in my backyard one day, holding a cocker spaniel puppy. An owl this size swooped down and flew right past my face. I was frozen. Took me a minute to realize it was after the puppy 😵💫
Gorgeous! I live not far from the International Owl Center, and the director has a great horned owl, named Alice, who's the official SpokesOwl for the org. She's very old now, almost 28, retired after working at the center for 20 yrs & she lives with the director.
I was once told that a great horned owl is the only bird of prey to have directly killed someone. A man was wearing a fur cap in the woods at dusk. An owl thought the cap was a small mammal and 💀
