I'm pretty sure my enormous personal laptop is on its last legs--the screen regularly goes black randomly. I hate the idea of having to buy a new one right now when I'm refusing to contribute to the economy as much as possible. Ugh.

Try using the laptop on an external screen, if the issue does not persist then it is likely a loose or damaged LVDS (display) cable for the internal screen.
A lot of laptops are more repairable than we think, depending on the model of course. Let me know if you need help testing/repairing it!
Why not go refurbished? Typically ex-lease machines like the HP Probook or Elitebooks worth $1500 new are now under $800 on the refurbished market and will have a much higher repairability score as well as abundant spare parts.
buy a framework laptop when you need to get a new one and buy a bunch of replacement parts too so that you won't need to later on on if/when it gets worse

Good luck!!
That's how i get ALL of my phones.
I haven't bought new/direct from manufacturers in more than a decade.
This way you get what you need and support a local/small business.
Just research the item and ask hella questions.
