Threads is undeniably taking off in the US, with huge engagement and loads of prominent accounts, and that will inevitably prove to be an irresistible draw for most, meaning this place is unlikely to ever "win" as some hope & it'll stay niche. But niche/non-mainstream might suit academics just fine!
I think people really need to start remembering what kind of bs Meta has pulled on their users. Because those shitty tactics absolutely will carry over to yet another Meta social media outlet eventually.
"To comply with those (EU) regulations, Meta will give EU users the choice of using Threads purely for consumption without a profile that allows them to make their own posts, one of the people said."
That's a good offer for an 'undecided' (IMO).
Bluesky have promised this feature soon
I hope not. So far although Bluesky has a lot of gentle 'social chatterers' who might decamp, it also has 'the best' ex X accounts on UK political and social issues, plus big legal, environmental and medical contingents who may not find Threads to their taste.
I've already seen pushback from some influential accounts having tried and left Threads. I've tried it and not liked it. Bad algorithm, low engagement, more like Instagram for broadcast than conversation.
A “Meta” product that’s supposed to be like the tweeters was, except (I think?) Instagram account is required, first & that account is perma-linked to threads. Dropping one automatically drops the other, meaning a your stuff are belong to meta.

Und sie haben ja auch schon angedeutet, dass sie eigentlich glauben mit happy Influencern mehr Profit machen zu können,
als mit echten Diskussionen.
