This may be as close as we'll ever get to a reason: "your conduct on many occasions has violated the Commonwealth's Code of Conduct for our Boards and Commissions and the Board of Visitors' Statement of Visitor Responsibilities."

As governor, he has the power to appoint (and remove) board members from public universities. Ellis's term was slated to last until 2026.
