I maintain that this isn’t for us, this is so non-rainbow family feel like Labour is doing something, it’s specifically so they can avoid accountability while our whānau criticise us for wanting too much too fast and complain that we’ll isolate our allies if we’re not patient/gentle/generous etc.

A lot of it is already funded? Which is great, but... what are they proposing there?

One of the related big problems we have, a hard one to fix, is there's just one surgeon here who does gender affirming surgeries

But WHY is that a hard one to fix? It should be as simple as "The waiting lists are too long we urgently need to recruit more people, probably from overseas, experienced in providing this care."

I don't want to regret talking out of my ass here, since it's quite outside my expertise. I know training someone new is hard and slow, and from what I understand keeping them here can be hard too. If keeping someone here is hard, I'm sure recruiting from overseas is even harder

IIRC the wait list is like 10+ years still? Which sure, is better than the 50+ years it used to be. But... fuck.

A lot of my trans friends are saving up for private surgeries because it's more viable, or hopeful, than waiting. Those few I know who have accessed surgery went overseas for it

Yeah afaik the top surgeon in Ōtautahi has recently gone fully private because the public system is horsing everyone around too much. He's still available and happy to do the surgeries, but the public funding isn't there.
