GTA 6 is on a league of its own. Even if millions of people might be willing to shell out $100 on release, there's no guarantee they'd do it for any other game.

Hell, last year was filled with AAA games struggling to sell for $70. I doubt bumping up the price would've improved their sales figures.

You are right about this. Only Rockstar, (and a few developers with good will and beloved IP), can get away with price hikes on their titles. Most publishers in the industry will not be able to get away with pricing their titles at $100.

I agree, there's definitely a few companies that put out such quality products that $100 seems fair - Baldur's Gate 3 is a great example I think.

The problem is other companies aren't going to care. Once the door's open, every major publisher is going through. You'll either pay, or not play at all.

Yeah but that "threat" only works if people actually want to play their game. Look at Suicide Squad: Even after a -95% sale, their player count is basically a flat line.

The market is very competitive right now. In many cases, it's easy for a customer to just say "I'll play something else instead".

And that goes double for sequels to games with a strong multiplayer component. Payday 3 is still in that very awkward situation where most of their community refuses to budge from Payday 2, for example.

Knock on wood, but that could even happen to GTA 6 if they mess up the transition from GTA 5.

There's one way to price it out my price range. I don't have a machine that'll play it and I'm no upgrading AND paying that price for a game.

I guess it makes it less likely children will be playing it if they can't afford it.

It is interesting that game prices haven't gone up like other things. And if games go digital only then there's no way to shop around and get a cheaper physical copy. Apparently the very first Monkey Island game (1990) was priced at $49.99, roughly $110 in today's money adjusting for inflation.

That's my thought too.

I don't love the idea of $100 per game, especially since they're going digital-only so there's no steelbooks, or collectors items, but it's just a fact that prices haven't gone up in a long time - I think ~20 years. I remember Xbox games being £50, then Xbox 360 games at £60.

If it actually does cost $100 CAD, it's going to further cement my choice of not buying GTA VI. Also; any other game that releases for more than $80 CAD, I am not buying those either.

My thoughts are that if it is going up to $100, then I'm waiting for a Steam sale to buy it, if I do at all. I'd be much more willing to pay an indie dev team that much but not a company like Rockstar.
