In my experience it is as long as it’s realistic. The place I’ve seen people get into trouble is when they proposing something new that is so far from their established skills that it seems they don’t appreciate how difficult it will be.

Absolutely, that makes some sense. Being practical in novel directions while still acknowledging the challenges involved. There is only so far we can forage after PhD, then PhD topic is more important than I previously thought.
With time you can go quite far away. I have changed what I do entirely in my career. But I’m talking here mostly about what you propose to do in the first ~5 years as you’re establishing the lab. With a sequence of modest steps that make sense at the time, you can end up quite far away.
