I really liked the characters, which kept me on the app for years, but I quit the moment they introduced ai genned phrases and translations.

It might be worth just quitting it then picking it back up at a point where you have more time in your life to actually focus on learning a language

Quitting Duolingo and abandoning my 500 day streak was a hard decision but 100% worth it. That thing is not useful once you get the basics. If you're actually serious about language learning it is not a good resource.
That being said atleast it taught me to read and construct slurs in Russian.
