If we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere. Salt lightly; pepper hard.

Mycenaean painted plaster head of a woman. Dated 13th century BCE. Found at Mycenae, Greece. National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece (4575). đź“· by me

This doesn’t even compare to European colonialism because in those days we didn’t see the colonised as allies, barely even as fellow humans. This is the deliberate extortion of an ally just because you can.

Global crisis style note: What Trump is doing to Ukraine is not 'blackmail', which would be demand for payment under threat of exposure of compromising information*. This is demand for payment under threat of violence/refusal to protect from violence. The word is 'extortion'.

I find this very moving: a 10-year-old Ukrainian boy who moved to the West of Ireland 2 years ago as a refugee, speaking in Irish of his love of playing Irish music

The premise of American foreign policy to Ukraine, today, is one of grievance. It is worth patiently considering the proposals. They reveal little about Ukraine, but much about America in February 2025. snyder.substack.com/p/recoup-the...

I swear to God that allowing people to pay to get on public transport by using their phones was the worst idea ever. In theory it’s great, until you realise that a third of the population are absolute fuckwits.

A tiny #Egyptian #frog amulet, made of carnelian (height 0.9 cm). Because of their numerous offspring, #frogs were considered a symbol of fertility. Dating c. 1540-1296 BC, New Kingdom. Photo: Cleveland Museum of Art 🏺 AncientEgyptBluesky

If you’d asked AI to write a piece of Russian propaganda in the style of Donald Trump, this is what you’d get. Well done America, you’ve elected a Russian asset as your President.

Having failed to exclude Zelenskyy, they sought to bully him. Having failed to bully him, they sought to bribe him. Having failed to bribe him, they sought to discredit him. Maybe they will get round him one way or another, but you can see how frustrated they are at him holding on.

Hurrah - Bluesky gets a mention! Turns out Ch 4’s “poll” about 52% of Gen Z asked would support a “strong leader” is, er, opaque to say the least & flies in the face of 8 other surveys in recent years Who knew? Private Eye

Agreed. It’s not like what’s on the other side of a still vaguely mainstream Conservative Party is better & if this govt screws up badly enough, whatever’s left of the British right is then the choice

Putin says Trump must go further before he’ll even agree to meet. Putin is entirely in the driving seat. The US has alienated its own allies, given Russia nearly all of what it wanted, bought Putin’s warped view of reality, and can’t even guarantee a meeting. The art of the deal, indeed.

There isn’t published evidence that America has spent 350 billion. Official papers suggest around half of that, much of which was spent in America not Ukraine. Europe says it has spent more. Zelenskyy polls lower than he did two years ago but still high and higher than Trump in America.

Trump doesn't think he should be subject to law, only respects elections when he wins them, longs to seize the Panama Canal, Greenland & Canada, worships power and sees government as an opportunity to enrich himself. Of course he admires Putin. Putin isn't the enemy for Trump; he's the aspiration.

Man who sold his soul says what?

Due to the layoffs I am afraid that we have had to take over the running of the US National Parks. We are updating the park regulations but for now the most important thing people can do before visiting a national park is to marinade themselves for 12 hours in olive oil, lime juice & garlic.

Entire nation of Ireland gives world’s largest side-eye*

This country has seen some bad moments in the 61 years, 5 months, 16 days I’ve been on this Earth. But it has never, ever before come close to the supertoxic level of stupidity, mendacity, narcissism, nihilism, and moral apathy that threaten to destroy it today.

🦔 Ancient Cycladic hedgehog! This little guy is from Chalandriani, Syros, Greece. He dates to the Early Cycladic II period (2800-2300 BCE). National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece. 📷 by me.
