Why do we never hear about the Nazi-Ustase death camps in Croatia like Jasenovac? Understanding that dynamic, esp. as it seems the perpetrators were never brought to justice, might have changed the story of the death of Yugoslavia in the 90s. I’ve been to several concentration camps- both labor and extermination, as well as several remembrance museums and sites. I think Auschwitz is remembered for the sheer scale and openness of the murders committed there.

Historians generally distinguish between extermination camps (e.g. Auschwitz and the others mentioned) and concentration camps

The main reason is that virtually nobody survived the other camps to tell about them. Only at Auschwitz did an appreciable number of victim-witnesses exist.

I also think it's notable that there were many thousands of Nazi concentration camps. Most of them were (brutal) labor camps rather than extermination camps; public memory focuses almost exclusively on the latter (perhaps understandably but that risks missing the systematic nature of the camps)

It's also worth noting that at Auschwitz, the Nazis dutifully (obsessively) created a multi-media record of their atrocities, some of which remained intact after liberation. Also left behind were stockpiles of Jewish *goods,* including teeth, hair, jewelry, glasses, suitcases, etc. Utter depravity.

Main reason is that Auschwitz-Birkenau was the only camp that had an appreciable number of survivors because it was a slave labor camp as well as an extermination camp. Almost no victim-eyewitnesses from the other camps lived to tell the tale.

I’m guessing for many it is symbolic of the overall horrific nature of nazism, to include other death camps, rather than referencing the specific horror endured by so many in that unimaginably evil complex.
