I always looked at deck builders as kind of like a souls like type of board game. Figure you may have a build you want to go for but you always have to work up to it.
Sorry I didn’t mean souls-like I meant rouge-like. So the mechanics where the more you play, even though some aspects are random, you still build around that randomness.
I think we usually sort them out by main gameplay loop. You could talk about drafting games (Seven Wonder eg), deck building games, ressource management games, dialogue/treason Games (such as Werewolves), cooperative games, silent cooperative games
I like the fact that, in board games, genres refer to mechanics, and there are no terms based on the name of other games. It's self-defined and does not force you to know the background of other games. Metroidvania < 2d side shooter + platformer + unlockable skills + unlockable areas. 😜

Like, all rpg games have characters you build up, or am I misunderstanding something?
40k/AOS are full sized wargames.
Spearhead/Combat patrol/Killteam are skirmish wargames.
Necromunda/Gorkamorka are rpg wargames.
My knowledge of board games is limited but my friend has several survival games.
