In academic publishing, the costs of #OpenAccess are usually borne by authors. For a publication such as Field Mycology, where authors are often studying fungi for the sheer love of it (unpaid), charging authors is not viable.

So, the publishing approach needed serious deliberation…

[email protected]'s example showed us that #OpenAccess publishing is viable for small non-profit societies, using the #OpenJournalSystems (OJS) platform, developed by the Public Knowledge Project @pkp.sfu.ca.

It was clear from consultation with our members that they enjoy the magazine-style format of Field Mycology. So I had to learn how to make a magazine.

We needed to minimise production costs, so we opted for Affinity Designer 2 which is free for non-profits.

I decided to avoid having to learn graphic design, by simply copying the design of previous issues.

However, as they were produced in QuarkXPress, they included some proprietary fonts. So I swapped these out for free fonts, available under an Open Font Licence.
