I've seen a lot of head-canon that it was intention, to let them escape etc.

I'm not sure I buy it, as they're consistently bad in the entire original trilogy.

Wish I could find that video of a playthrough of one of the recent Jedi games and they're just hanging on a beam, surrounded by Stormtroppers yelling "get them", blaster shots whizzing past their ears. For a while. Not one hits. Eventually the streamer says "I'm going to make some tea."

To be fair, I occasionally had to do my Personal Weapons Test with the Sterling Submachinegun, which is what they made the Stormtrooper blasters out of. And the pass mark was to hit a man-sized target at 20 yards, single aimed shots, with at least 50% of your shots. It was quite difficult!

I was confusing the Sterling for the Sten and thought you must be nearly 100.

Though the Sterling was retired in '94 so that's still dating you somewhat :)

What’s wild is that the Stormtrooper’s aim somehow deteriorated in the short time between that one episode of Andor and A New Hope, which wasn’t that big of a time gap.

Nah.
That monument place on Ghorman was a killbox with thousands of people.
Stormtroopers can miss their target each time but still kill the one beside.
