The GCSE English Literature curriculum from 2015 onwards has turned pupils off the subject. Gove and Cummings wanted to “toughen it up” but only succeeded in sucking all the joy out of it- it’s become just another rote learning grind for pupils.

My daughter graduated with a first in English Literature last year and I could not be prouder that she has an accolade that winds up the gammonati so much. There wasn't much that was woke about a pile of old books though. These people see threats where there are none.

They're angry that black authors are now taught instead of dismissed, that the shame of colonisation and cultural violence are discussed instead of ignored, and that lit courses are used not solely to sanctify the classics but also to prompt timely and necessary debate. If that's woke, sign me up.
