I understand those Labour voters clinging to an old idea of what Labour stood for, just as I understand the old school Conservatives who refuse to acknowledge the shift to extreme right which has taken hold in that party, but it doesn't change that a shift has happened. 2/

In its attempts to "prevent the rise of the far right", an objectively failed argument, Labour is very much enacting policies which harm those groups who are seen as "in the minority" and therefore "politically disposable", banking on supporters to just keep supporting them. 3/

A big issue they have though is that the majority of the electorate are not aligned with a specific party. They vote on personal issues. By trying to appease the likes of Reform Labour will lose those voters who want a fairer country, while never going far enough for those who don't. 4/

People want quick fixes. People are concerned about the increasing grip of the politics of division. You can never combat those politics by playing to them. You need to change the narrative and make the positive case, rather than using marginalised groups as a scapegoat. 5/

I don’t necessarily want quick fixes. Longer term good fixes and heading in the right direction would work for me. However, the direction now will lose my vote.

That is not an easy thing to do. It takes time. It takes policies which actually benefit people. It takes accepting a short term hit in the polls. Labour have both the majority and the time to do it though. Refusing to do so is a political choice which will only harm already vulnerable people. 6/

Labour is currently making the choice to abandon the principles which led people to support them in favour of chasing the votes of those who never will. In practical terms, benefits cuts, increased deportations, permanent puberty blockers ban, they've already gone further than Conservatives did. 7/

A depressing thing about British politics is how voters often choose to respond to tackle failure to deliver from a party to vote for the next biggest party; rather than on policies.

Hence in Runcon fools talking about Reform as an alternative to Labour, rather than anything policy based.

Listening to LBC call ins, as soon as there is a call in about Russia you get to hear first hand from callers how many zombies Russia has spawned in this country already. It's deep. I don't know why it's not more actively called out by red and blue alike. It's existential.

They vote on what they 'see' and feel. They don't see things first hand, they see things in their online stream. Often made up. But that drives what they vote for

I worry about this window. It's moved by nefarious online forces eg musk, Kremlin. So why move policy to match it?
