I agree with Helen’s advice. You’re not expected to know the answer or even get the question right but you need to be able to describe your thought process. We practice by describing an unfamiliar mechanism out loud.
Only have experience of Cambridge but in my view the best thing to do is to speak. Think out loud. Don't sit quiet if they don't immediately know the answer. Start speaking about what is known and work through logically.
Dr Alan Hill of Queen's College asked me, "Tell me Mr Hall, how would you define reggae music?" because the word reggae was in my personal statement. Read that and practise for those tangential questions!
