If we say you're working with a semi-large 35cm square with medium-thin ~70gsm paper, it's about 90 microns thick. With those measurements, and the Perfect Bone Folder flattening those creases, after step 6 you will have a 5,468 3/4 micron wide piece that's 5,670 microns thick. (0.2153in x 0.2232in)

After step 12, your fingers may be sore but the piece will have surpassed its initial width, with 4,096 layers totaling 36.864cm (~14.5in).

Depends on the ratio between thickness and width. If the paper is as wide as the observation universe... Oh, now it's singed in a couple of places

I think the intent is that it not. You do have to make sure the paper is flat enough to fold for the next step, after all, and some compression might be involved.
