I've been saying this for many years, too many people confused capitalism with democracy, and shopping became a substitute for voting for many Americans. We're now a purely capitalist society and when we do vote we end up with members of Congress who are only in it for the money and power.

30 years later, Europe’s “racing ahead of us in forming effective, functioning, decent democracies & economies” whose citizens don’t worry about how they’ll pay their doctors, don’t fear going bankrupt from medical bills or education, or “worry about how they will feed themselves when they retire.”

I once thought the only thing stopping social democracy here was the Cold War. The real problem wasn’t even the DoD budget, it was ideology. Since “winning” the Cold War we’ve not only moved toward oligarchy, we’ve also been surrendering to Russia and China. The nation’s fully hollowed out by greed.
