I think, like many government “tricks”, it’s a way of reconciling the chasm between campaign promises and what is actually needed. It kicks the can, with the invoice in it, down the road. But is only borrowing money at a ludicrous cost compared to what government can do directly. Makes no sense!

The govt doesn't borrow. It issues gilts AFTER it spends the currency it issues into the economy. The gilts are purchased using the swelled bank reserves that result from the government's spending.

Spending funds gilts. Gilts don't fund spending.

Moot point. Governments issue gilts, bonds and treasury notes. In all cases they get cash and pay interest also called a coupon. They are all part of government debt a.k.a. borrowing to the man in the street. PFI bypasses this process.

I sold my business to PE 6 years ago & in general it’s been a good deal. All the team were given shares in the company and when they flip the business (as you say they always do) they will all get a good pay out. They have invested ££ into the business I never could have. For us was a win.

As a retired social worker with an interest in economics, I am especially concerned that private equity firms now own a high percentage of nursing homes. Bodes badly for the residents and the employees.
