NSF now sending “stop work” notices on funded active grants. Doesn’t sound like a pause.

I can't decide which would be a worse outcome here. That research is cut off permanently. Or that the administration uses the pause to implement new restrictions on science to the point where the only "research" researchers can do and publish is research supporting administration-approved "facts."

yes. a few days ago I heard from a friend - CEO of a refugee resettlement agency - that she got a cease and desist letter from someone in Trump's government. This would require the federal government to breach its contract with them, to stop their activities.

We also just got a notice from the world resources institute (funded by the u.s. state department) to do the same. Was a sustainability project. Project 25 underway

I'd love to see a list of all of these in one place, so I can pass it along to some possibly interested reporters.

The speed, breadth, and scope of this is newsworthy. As I noted, they went hard against refugee agencies they funded right away.

Yeah I haven’t seen anyone else talking about this. I’ve seen coverage of stop work for agencies themselves and for reviews of proposed projects, but haven’t seen anyone say that they have received a stop work on an active NSF project

I got a false alarm on one nsf grant because accounting within our org misinterpreted a normal notice. Folks are jumpy so that could be happening elsewhere too

A broad definition of "DEI" is being used to target NSF projects. Yes, it definitely looks like active grants are being stopped. My own faculty are dealing with this.

I guess without any centralized communication about what's happening, we won't know if these are isolated incidents until we know. Transparent communication about what's happening at the system-level is needed. Until then I don't think we can expect folks to stop talking to each other, though.

Sure, but what I mean is that I haven't seen even a single incident reported first hand which makes it hard to understand what this looks like. AFAIK there were not even external NIH work stoppages either, just internal ones.

Yes, centralized transparent communication would be great. I can't help wonder, tho, whether the lack of communication is purposive. What's going on "behind the curtain?" E.g., are grant applications and current research projects being screened for DEI connections? Researchers should be nervous!
