For many older Americans, SS is their *only* source of income. I retired last yr and hubby retires next yr. Last year we did in-depth financial planning. If our SS payments were to disappear, we wouldn't be on the streets but we'd be pretty screwed - even though we both paid into SS for 50 yrs.
