I agree completely, but it was interesting to rewatch recently with non comedy nerds (my parents and my wife) who were not taken with it at all, actively put off in fact! Too knowing and efficient maybe?

Yeah! Which helps you understand the lead character before unleashing the ensemble. Worth looking at other “charismatic Groucho dude” pilots - Cheers, Scrubs, MASH - and seeing if they let Bugs Bunny have all the plots in ep one.
