A mate of mine hangs pictures as a side-job, and is very good at it; does galleries and also super-rich people’s houses. He said the problem the rich have is that they double all the sensible measurements for a house, and then don’t know what to do with all the space. It’s impossible to fill.

When the dimensions of a building become big pointlessly, you’re not living in a home, you’re living in a conference centre. Put pictures on the wall that are big enough to fill it, or many many pictures, and you just compound that impression. It’s a public space.

It’s one of the great pleasures of Grand Designs, seeing the super rich build their dream home and find they’ve accidentally built a university block or a library, and a family can’t really live in one of those. Private space as public space.

Modern American houses are ugly as sin. When we were house hunting, we saw some right shockers. They particularly like to "design" around the garage so whatever fuckery that does to the internal spaces doesn't matter, so long as they have a giant garage fronting the road.

They have so much space, they really don't know how to use it effectively.

Both our houses were 100+ years old and were much more sensible. The one in Shaker was designed to funnel hot air up and out in the summers, for eg, because you had to. Aircon opened up all sorts of bad design options.

The central staircase is built in a column, with a half turn between every floor, so that the hot air is funnelled upwards and of a window at the top of the house, in the attic. At least, that was the theory. We had aircon units in the windows instead.
