Or everyone in Gen-X has some sort of mental health problem and they're just pretending they're fine, which quite frankly would explain a lot of their behavior.

We can’t have it both ways.
Some did see it live, but it's more likely you watched news footage after the fact.
The principal hated me (she was a nun and I was the only kid whose parents were divorced) so she kept me in for recess. I had to sit in her office where she had it on TV.
I don't recall her ever even talking to me about it.
But yeah, unprocessed trauma explains a lot.
Gen-X was also born and raised under the specter that a nuclear war was not only possible but imminent. It’s why we answered “whatever” to everything. Nothing matters if tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
