Some did see it live, but it's more likely you watched news footage after the fact.

I was the only one in my school who saw it live.

The principal hated me (she was a nun and I was the only kid whose parents were divorced) so she kept me in for recess. I had to sit in her office where she had it on TV.

I was home sick that day, I was in the second grade. My mom had the tv on all day, so it was pretty much on repeat in the house.

I don't recall her ever even talking to me about it.

I was in sixth grade science class (Catholic school). The teacher wheeled in the AV cart and we all watched it. After, the teacher wordlessly wheeled the cart out of the room and the whole school went to the cafeteria in the church basement across the street for an assembly & prayer.

BUT I think the original post is BS. It was a huge deal. We didn’t just soldier on. It was a national calamity and was in the news for days and days. We honored the astronauts. There was mourning. Etc. Picture of Christa McAuliffe were put up in schools although I did grow up in Florida.

If you grew up in Florida you probably did see it live. It was shown on a school network deal through NASA TV that was more common on the East Coast than the west coast. Over the air networks did not show it live.

Like the majority of people I went to school with swear they remember seeing it live, but I know my school did not have NASA TV or CNN, it was an impossibility, those were the only two live options. We just remember the news coverage.

Oh, NASA was huge for us in Florida schools. There were school fundraising contests for trips to Cocoa Beach to watch launches etc.

Totally possible. The image of it exploding though was shown on tv non stop so I’m sure almost the entire country saw it by the nightly news…which everyone watched back then. As a Gen X er, I don’t think we’re special. Getting kind of annoyed with folks framing things like this.

Dude, follower of yours but back then shuttle launches were shown in schools. They were huge deals. I think it was national on every channel. It is burned in my brain that my 2nd grade teacher forgot to turn it on for our class and the teacher next door came screaming into our room when it happened.

Gen-X was also born and raised under the specter that a nuclear war was not only possible but imminent. It’s why we answered “whatever” to everything. Nothing matters if tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.

Then the wall fell.
