Would you believe me if I said you used to be able to accompany your friends and family all the way to their gate at the airport even if you didn't have a ticket yourself or are you too young to remember a pre-9/11 world?

I took a plane in New Zealand in 2000 and walked into the gate and then had to turn around and walk back out and back in again because there was NO. SECURITY. No metal detector, no bag check, no nuthin'.
Or park for a few minutes in front, waiting for them to come out, rather than driving back to the highway and circling the airport for another 45 minutes?
In fall 1999 I visited a friend at Duke and I have a distinct memory of him waiting with me at my gate until I boarded the plane. Never forget what they took from you.
When I was a kid we would get off the plane to be greeted by family, not even minor unaccompanied, literally get off the plane with one parent to see the other waiting.
A year or two after 9-11 my grandma flew to visit us and didn't get the memo that she had to come out of the secure area, and was too deaf to hear the intercom. It took my mom hours to harangue security into letting her through to find her mom
A weird wrinkle of 9/11 is it kind of coincided with the exact age I didn't want my damn mom up in my shit for three hours before I got on a plane, so um, thanks 9/11 I guess
I’m Canadian, and I remember when we could cross on the ground into the US without a passport! I had to explain to a family member the other day that yes, I needed my passport for a trip by car to Cornell 😂
the Albuquerque International Sunport has a beautiful observation deck, looking south over the runways and at the Manzano mountains, with a plaque dedicating it to the children of Albuquerque, that they may be inspired to careers in aviation on fieldtrips. Dedicated 1997.
