Everything up to the Citadel coup is good imo. Makes sense for Cerberus to go after the archives, the genophage plot line is strong....and then the wheels start to come off a bit

I don't think they got lost in their IP. I think they got told to rush the thing out, so they got a big ole stamp that said "Cerberus Did it" to iron out the plot.

It's because they painted themselves into a corner. ME3 was the tail-end of a series built on character development and player story choices that were supposed to matter, with many of them basically leading to mutually exclusive outcomes. Getting it truly right would have been an insane undertaking.

I feel like the best thing they could do is revive Andromeda (I maintain that its gameplay core was extremely solid and the premise had potential), or just tell some other much more self-contained stories in the universe.

A lot of people say that, I don't think that's what most people had a problem with.

The problem was the lack of choices at the end, everyone understood that the things leading up to the end choices kind of did have to be funneled and simplified.

It's fine that something I spent several hours two games ago trying to figure out a third option and eventually succeeding on didn't hugely impact the end, maybe made a fight easier or changed contacts, whatever.

The problem was just having three choices that had no meaning, as the actual end.

i unironically think that the ME3 ending controversy should be included as a 'prelude' section in the gamergate wikipedia article. its not directly related, but it def helped form the mass that would later become GGers.

You're so funking right. It set the stage for it being 'okay' to flip out over a video game. I was around and an active fan when ME3 came out and it was vicious. I also began to develop my hypothesis that people just hate when things they like end, regardless of the objective quality.

Citadel was also the closing content and came out almost a year later. I think the ending patch was under a month. Which is so much worse.

IMO, Citadel was coming out regardless. Its just a ME fanfic made official and they loved making it. What did happen was a FREE patch to expand on specific elements of the ending, give a refusal option, and I *think* added the LI dialogue. Which is WORSE! They did extra crunch to put it out!

Rough launch aside, Andromeda felt like it was building off of Mass Effect 1, and I think a lot of people just had no idea what to make of that.
