Not sure but it'll be a combination of factors - it's impossible to divorce from the mass-radicalisation of the centre right, plus chuck in online clicks, US clicks, increasing extremism among staff there

The right wing took postmodernist critiques of truth of those in power and inverted the critiques to those already oppressed.

We inhabit a world where the right wing increasingly live in a post-truth fantasy land where policies that are largely unpopular/minoritarian are championed as populist.

The center-right didn't entirely radicalize, though. A bunch of them left increasingly populist right-wing parties. They've just been replaced by people who used to vote left wing. See that both in the US with the Never Trump Republicans and the UK with former Tories.
