I think it’s hard to give my 4 year old a love of reading with Tap it, pat it etc.

We read every morning and I explain that soon he will be reading books that will make him laugh like crazy.

I also printed around 100 words and make sentences out of them that make him laugh.

20 years ago there was a study on the original computerized classroom reading reward program, Accelerated Reader. It showed it was not encouraging reading outside class. It was sucking the intrinsic reward out, and pushing the extrinsic reward. And still, teachers keep bribing.

Surely the two can run alongside each other? We run a self regulating reward scheme, but also share the love of reading in all that we do (wonderful library, community reading boxes, story time in every class every day, sharing books, parents coming in to read to whole class etc)

Also, it's hard resetting habits from their previous experience. Two statements I've had from my class this term, which made me 🤨 :
1. I can't read 3 from the same series in a row.
2. I can't read that Percy Jackson because I'm not allowed to read the same book twice.

This is one of the reasons I've always struggled with reading diaries. They always end up being used to reward (and, unfortunately sometimes, punish) reading habits. Build the culture in the classroom and, eventually, they'll want to read at home too.

This is so true , my daughter hates reading as a child , and her father insisting she did it only made it worse , I’ve never seen her pick up a book since school ! Breaks my heart as I’m an avid reader

Forcing reading can be so damaging - we went through the same thing. What helped us was finding things that didn't feel like "reading." Storymancer turned it into an interactive game where she controls the story. Now she actually looks forward to it.

Story time (including poetry at times) was one of the best times of the day with my class. We would choose some great chapter books and they were all hooked and wanting to carry on. It's the power of books!
