Another top entry from @jonnybid.bsky.social in the Union magazine. I always read Survivors as part of transition and it always goes down a storm. Even the boy who fainted one year still loved the book!

For any educators out there who are looking for books to inspire the teaching of RE. 1/2 #EduSky #PrimaryRE docs.google.com/presentation...

A school RfP policy in one post: * Time to read and be read to every day * Time to talk about books together * Freedom to read graphic novels, picturebooks, poetry, non-fiction, magazines, anything * New books are an investment, not an expense * Work with librarians, bookshops, authors, poets, etc

Please Don't Read The Footnotes Please by @robwaltonwriter.bsky.social and illustrated by @reenamakwana.bsky.social is a wonderfully chaotic and anarchic collection of short stories, interspersed with Rob's random (and hilarious) musings in the footnotes. Published by @theemmapress.bsky.social.

Really enjoyed The Gnome Book by Loes Riphagen (translated by Michele Hutchison and published by @pushkinchildrens.bsky.social). Had lots of fun visiting the world of Kick, the gnome, and exploring the wonderfully detailed illustrations. Definitely a book children will enjoy sharing with a friend.

My latest article for @neunion.bsky.social Educate magazine is about non-fiction. It's often overlooked when talking about reading in the classroom and it shouldn't be. An exciting non-fiction text can engage readers just as well as any other. @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social @teresacremin.bsky.social

World Book Day has the most sustained impact when it's used as a springboard for developing a school culture of reading. This year, we're exploring Daniel Pennac's Rights of the Reader (beautifully illustrated by Quentin Blake). Each class will develop their own set of reading rights and share them.

Have only read a few of them so far but I'm very excited by the books on the longlist for the 2025 Klaus Flugge Prize. So important for new picturebook creators to get this spotlight. www.klausfluggeprize.co.uk

Delighted to be this morning's stop on the @empathylabuk.bsky.social Read for Empathy Discovery Tour. I want to mention the poetic brilliance of And I Climbed And I Climbed by @stephenlightbown.bsky.social (illustrated by Shih-Yu Lin, published by @troikabooks.bsky.social). Full of emotion and hope.

Very sad news about Rick Buckler. The Jam had a run of about ten singles that is probably unparalleled.

I think everyone who works in a primary school accepts that the curriculum is overloaded. We simply can't squeeze in everything that we're supposed to. However, there are two things that we must ensure take place each day: class storytime and independent reading. They're far too important to drop.

Am currently putting together some teaching resources for The Wrong Shoes by Tom Percival. When you love a book as much as I love this one, it doesn't even feel like work. If you're in Y6, do get hold of a copy. A couple of my pupils who read it recently both said it's one of their favourite books.

When a class have got independent reading time, try to sit with the children and read alongside them. Share the book you're reading, talk about why you're enjoying it and ask them about their choices. The impact on attitudes to reading will be massive. Organising the glue tray can wait.

25 of our Year 6s signed up to shadow the Oxfordshire Book Awards this year so by the end of the day, all these books had gone! I'm excited to see which ones the children enjoy the most. @jonnybid.bsky.social @vikkivarley.bsky.social @anitaranih.bsky.social @zoanne.bsky.social

When your class are enjoying each other's company, caring about the wellbeing of their friends and supporting one another in lessons, that's the time to look round the room and realise there's no other job that can compare. Before it all kicks off again.

Have just had a sneak preview of all the books on this year's primary and secondary @empathylabuk.bsky.social booklists. They're two incredible collections that need to be in all schools across the UK. The lists are released on Thu 13th Feb. More information here: www.empathylab.uk/RFE

The next Open University/UKLA RfP conference takes place in Doncaster on Saturday 29th March. Fantastic keynotes from author Sufiya Ahmed and @teresacremin.bsky.social, plus some exciting workshops. I'm already looking forward to it! More info here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/reading-fo...

Have just updated my @bookshop-org-uk.bsky.social page with some new recommendations. There are several lists including Picturebook Assemblies, Favourite KS2 Read-Alouds, Poetry for Primary Schools and more. An easy way to support independent bookshops. uk.bookshop.org/shop/reading...

Squeak! Squawk! Roar! by @katepoet.bsky.social (illustrated by Hannah Asen), a collection of poetry about animals, is well worth getting hold of. Ideal for KS1 and lower KS2, and also used regularly for our class Poem of the Day. Kate does a great online session too! @otterbarrybooks.bsky.social

It would be really interesting to see the what the reaction would be if a page from a graphic novel or comic appeared in the KS2 Reading SATs this year. It won't happen but I'd love it if it did.

Really enjoyed delivering a session about graphic novels for @wensumenglishhub.bsky.social this afternoon. It's great to see that they've become far more valued in schools over recent years as there's so much that they can offer. #graphicnovels

We used Mr Wolf's Class by @mrwolfcomics.bsky.social to talk about empathy today. It's Mr Wolf's first day as a teacher and one of his pupils has disappeared. My class were fantastic at using the visual clues alongside the text to work out how he might be feeling.

Even better, 10% of children's book sales in February go to @booktrust.org.uk and @scottishbooktrust.bsky.social.

I enjoy reading children's books and choose to do so. Not all school staff have the time or inclination but they do need to know about them. Having a couple of staff meetings each year with time to explore picturebooks, poetry and graphic novels could make a world of difference in the classroom.

The comments from our Year 5/6 pupils about The Bear-Shaped Hole by @writerpoetjohn.bsky.social and @thomasdocherty.bsky.social show how much they thought of it and what a powerful book it is. We spent a long time yesterday talking about the story and what it meant to us.
