Honestly this is great, I think so much abt the effect Edβs trauma has on his relationships with alcohol/substances and violenceβ¦but a lot of people are uncomfortable with how complicated and messy that is π
yeah π not to be the canyon guy but i feel like lots of people don't like to break away from the black/white, hero/villian mould to acknowledge how deeply (and also clumsily) ofmd delves into the cycle of abuse and the ways that trauma can cause people incl ed to turn their hurt outwards onto others
i know that abused-becomes-abuser narratives can be really triggering and i know that people really hate to distinguish between a character they like a) doing something bad that was justified or b) doing something that they sympathise with but for which they were NOT justified.
the immaturity in this fandom around those topics is reflective of that with which the show sort of carelessly shifted tones between a very serious problem and a very shallow solution but it still bothers me that people won't admit ed has done bad things and still needs to do lots more healing
or that the show really dropped the ball on the resolution to that narrative and that it would have been a lot better if they'd treated ed's mental health in their attempt at a resolution arc as seriously as they'd treated it at the start of the season. anyway that's my big old complain session.
