It may be the job to solicit opinions on the topic, but of what value are the opinions if the topic has not been correctly identified and stated accurately?
We need not give any air time to that, pro or con, whatever political leanings you think are likely to come from NPR listeners.
The original question was "we want to know what Canada as the 51st state means to you?" as opposed to "what do threats of annexation by our former closest ally and now burgeoning autocracy mean to you?

A discussion about the leader of the world's most powerful army musing and then asserting Canadian annexation without power guard rails is absolutely an appropriate discussion prompt.
And using the term "51st State" is appropriate as that's literally the issue under discussion. Without Trump's rhetoric we would not be thinking about the annexation of Canada.
