Not sure how you do it. Take The Boys, look at how pathetic and creepy Homelander is, certainly not cool -- yet the audience was still rooting for him.

Ooo, ooo, ooo, Daenerys Targaryen as well - GRRM clearly set her up to be the eventual villain she turns out to be from the off, but because we're following her (inevitably sympathetic) POV, a lot of people rejected it
Yep, 100% this. I'd say GRRM did this very well in the books. I hated Theon but hated Ramsey more. I'd find myself wanting Theon to take out Ramsey, but knew someone would have to come along and do away with Theon.
It's extremely hard to do for all these reasons, and you can't control how audiences react. I think people aspire to be powerful like the baddies, but to dampen the power makes them ineffective. I suppose it's just something to keep in mind going forward, not glorifying them to the best we can
