Healthcare seems to be operating more like survival of the fittest. Jobs as well. Maybe even relationships. A scary thought I've had is that maybe people are not equipped to function in an environment that has so so many people. I think this is why we feel like we have no control of our governments

This is forced surrender terminology by the HEALTHCARE industry that profits from my ILLNESS, and not my HEALTH.

We should pay them when we stay healthy and withhold “premiums” when sick!

Not a great analogy, since property insurance and health insurance aren't at all equivalent. Health insurance is based on the concept of shared risk pools. It evolved from the "benevolent societies" of the 18th & 19th centuries. People pooled resources to help others in need.

The reality is that everyone, and especially the federal government, pays way too much for health care. Far more than any other developed country. And the reason why is we have unnecessary middlemen who not only profit themselves, but also cause price inflation.

I live in the UK and the government here has provided heath care insurance since 1911 (full coverage only since 1948).

You can still buy private insurance; if you do you and you get ill, you get nicer food and better accommodation. They do tend to ask you to pay more if you are already ill.

Healthcare (at least much of it) is most definitely an insurable commodity, if you treat the start of any condition as the date of incurring all associated costs.

There are a lot of problems with how health "insurance" works, but real insurance could theoretically apply to healthcare.

That's kinda true. Insurance is based on risk/time period, and health conditions aren't really a risk, it's an inevitability, and one with recurring costs. Ad&d and short term disability, sure those make sense.

Well clearly it works well enough to make the insurance companies rich, so you certainly can, but the way I see it if they have recurring costs like that universal health care is better because they'll never say "sorry, pre-existing conditions don't apply" and explain it away as an excessive "risk"

Instead of forcing companies to cover pre-existing conditions, why not instead force them to cover post-existing conditions? If something comes up in a covered individual, that insurance needs to cover all consequences, even after coverage otherwise ends.

Healthcare is one of the few areas where good old-fashioned supply & demand doesn’t work. If you have a disease and they have the cure you pay whatever they demand or you suffer and possibly die.
